Steps to Keep Your Family Safe and Healthy

Do you want to keep your family safe in 2023? If so then you need to make some big changes. With that being said, it’s the smaller changes that can be just as impactful. If you want to make a start or if you want to make sure that you are always putting your family first then this guide will help you to do just that.

Spend More Time Outdoors

As a family, you need to spend more time outdoors if possible. Children spend far too much time in front of a screen in this day and age, so you need to encourage them to have other interests instead. It may be that you get them involved with board games or that you encourage them to break the routine and go outside a little bit. Find somewhere that you can explore or go on an adventure. Put your shoes and coat on and go on a family jog if you feel like it. If you have a dog then now is the perfect time for you to take them on a walk with you. If you can take the time to embrace the great outdoors then this will make it much easier to become part of your habit.

Make it Fun to Be Hygienic

You also need to make hygiene fun. One of the biggest struggles you will come across is brushing your teeth. This is one of the most important habits you can help them to build. It’s not the most exciting though, so it may be that your children lose interest over time or that they stop engaging as much. If you can use this time to teach them fun ways to make brushing their teeth fun. You might want to see who can stand on one leg for the longest period of time or that you have a contest to see who can remember the most words or phrases. By doing this, you can make the whole thing easier.

Embrace Small Moments

Moving your body every single day is important. It doesn’t matter how old you are. Young kids tend to get a lot of exercise but older adults often need to try and make time for it. If you can, take the time to create small moments every day where you can move. If you can keep the habit of doing some gentle stretches in the morning then this is great. Add some squats or lunges if you can, or even try and do a dance routine. This is a great way for you to really push yourself and it gives you the chance to feel happier in who you are.

Introduce Snacks

It can be tempting for you to reach for the nearest snack all the time, even if it is not what you want or what you need. Look for ways that you can introduce healthy snacks for your kids. Keep fruit bowls stocked with family favourites and make sure that it is always easy for them to reach. Put snacks on shelves and in the fridge where everyone can find them. You can then put any unhealthy snacks out of reach for your kids so keep that in mind.

One of the best things you can do if you want to protect your family would be for you to invest in health insurance. Believe it or not, insuring your family means enjoying the peace of mind knowing that if you need to make an appointment or if you need help with an issue, you know that you are going to be covered for all of that. There are lots of things you can do to protect your family even more, so make sure that you give some thought to that as it could help you to take advantage of more long-term options down the line.

Buckle Up

If you are ever in a car accident then the simple act of having your seat belt on can mean a difference between both life and death. Car crashes are one of the leading causes of death for those who are under the age of 40. Someone dies from an accident every 14 seconds. Too. Seat belts happen to save so many people, so make sure that you are using them and that you encourage your family to do the same. If you don’t then it may end up having dire consequences for you in the future, so keep that in mind. If you can, you also need to be using child safety seats. Using child safety seats can reduce the risk of fatal injury quite considerably. Just make sure that you put the seat in properly. The safest place for your child would be in the middle of the back seat. If you do have to have your child in the front then make sure that you are turning the airbag off. 

Don’t Drink

You also have to make sure that you do not drink and drive. 40% of deaths from auto accidents involve drinking to some extent. A lot of drunk-driving deaths can be prevented, so if you are going to be drinking, make sure that you hire a taxi or simply talk to a friend about having a designated driver. If you can do this then you will soon find that it becomes easier for you to give yourself the boost you need.

Wear a Helmet

Always use a helmet whenever you are out cycling or when you are playing sports. This is especially the case with sports such as football, hockey or even baseball. Around 800 cyclists a year end up having accidents and most of them could be prevented. If you have a head injury when out on your bike then you may end up needing serious medical treatment. You can prevent this if you simply take the time to enforce the rule that your kids do not go out without their helmets on. Set a good example by making sure that you always wear your helmet when you are out cycling too. If you can do this then you will soon find that things end up working in your favor.

Prevent Falls

If you live with older parents then make sure that you do your bit to help them prevent falls. It is estimated that around 20,000 people who are over the age of 65 end up dying each year because they fall over. If you want to prevent this then a good way to do so would be for you to make sure you have things in place to protect them. You can also try and make sure that you clear your home of tripping hazards. One way you can do this would be for you to get rid of any electrical cords as well as throw rugs and toys. Install some grab bars in the bathroom next to the toilet and next to the tub or shower so that when people are getting in and out of the bath they have a bit of extra support. 

Watch Windows

Screens are designed to keep insects out, not kids in. If you happen to install some guards that stop kids from being able to operate windows or if they cannot open them more than a couple of inches then ensure you have a way to release the guard in case there is ever a fire. Periodically check the windows too so you can make sure that they have not been nailed shut and to make sure that they have not swollen shut either.

Learn CPR

You never know when you are going to have to use CPR. If you want to help yourself here then one thing you can do is take time to learn it. You can get CPR certification online and this is a great way for you to practice before something does happen. If you can take the time to learn CPR then your family will be better for it and you may also find that it is a skill that will go on to benefit you in your career too, so keep that in mind.

Be Mindful near the Water

Did you know that so many people drown every year? Kids up to the age of 4 are most susceptible here. If you want to do something about that while eliminating stress then make sure that you never leave your child alone when they are near a beach or even in the pool. If you do have a swimming pool then it is wise for you to try and fence it in. You might also want to try and install some self-closing doors here. You will then be able to stop people from going into the pool. Adding a pool cover is always a good idea so you can stop access to water, as well as make sure that you do not have people peering over or trying to use your pool when it si not in use. Things like this can even add value to your home.
