Longlisted for the 2022 Nationwide Ebook Award for Nonfiction, this memoir by Ingrid Rojas Contreras, depicts rising up in 1980’s-90’s Bogota, Columbia, in a household of fortune-tellers, healers, and practitioners of the magical arts. Additionally a harrowing story of violence and societal/familial upheaval, Contreras begins her storytelling with an account of her expertise with amnesia. A charming learn, the easiest sort of memoir, one which immerses me in an unknown life and place. And but, for all of the otherworldly-ness of her story, our shared human expertise and her hard-won knowledge was shining by way of, as on this passage:

Therapeutic was present in stretching towards abundance. It was not about leaving the previous behind, dividing the self into good and unhealthy, however about opening a path by way of ruins.

And this—-

I needed to make a house with misery. Give up means to reply to what shapes us, the layers that we’re. Many issues don’t need to be overcome, solely outlived, after which lived with.

Meals for thought on this autumnal equinox, as we go into yet one more fall season right here within the Northern Hemisphere. Wishing you properly—-
