Remedy Buzzwords: Empathy

What’s Empathy?

 

Empathy is:

  • The motion of understanding, being conscious of, being delicate to, AND vicariously experiencing the sentiments, ideas, and experiences of one other individual.
  • The flexibility to share another person’s emotions or experiences by imagining what it could be wish to be in that individual’s state of affairs

Empathy vs Sympathy

  • Whereas sympathy entails acknowledging one other’s emotional or bodily battle and displaying concern, pity, or help for them, empathy goes a step additional. i.e. “I’m sorry you’re in ache.”
  • Empathy entails understanding an individual’s state of affairs by placing your self into their footwear, usually feeling feelings *with* the opposite individual. i.e. “I understand how you are feeling” or “I really feel your ache.”

Execs and Cons of Empathy

  • Attune to others’ feelings or experiences
  • Builds belief (all forms of relationships)

Cons:

  • Greater publicity to distressing data/experiences
  • Secondary trauma
  • Feeling overwhelmed or burned out (see compassion fatigue)
