Apart from H+ you can use additional tools for building rapport such as mirroring body language, matching speech patterns, and demonstrating empathy.

Mirroring and Matching

Mirror and matching involves subtly copying the body language, speech patterns, and even breathing rhythms of the person you are communicating with. For example, if the person tends to speak slowly and softly, you adjust your speaking pace and volume to match theirs. This nonverbal alignment creates a subconscious sense of kinship and trust.

Pacing and Leading

Start by verbally acknowledging the current experience or emotions of the person, known as ‘pacing.’ Once rapport is established, you can ‘lead’ by introducing new ideas or suggestions.

For instance, if someone is feeling anxious, you might say, “I understand you’re feeling anxious right now, and that’s completely okay. Many find that with each breath, they can begin to feel a bit more relaxed and in control.”

Language Patterns and Suggestions

Metaphors

Telling stories or using metaphors that parallel the listener’s situation allows them to draw their own meanings and connections. For example, a therapist might tell a story about a caterpillar becoming a butterfly to symbolize a client’s potential for transformation.

Embedded Commands

These are directives hidden within a longer sentence, designed to be absorbed by the subconscious. For instance, “As you begin to feel more relaxed, you can find ways to make positive changes in your life.”

Speak Directly to the Unconscious With Strategic Storytelling

Milton Erickson was renowned for his innovative approach to delivering carefully crafted stories that would bypass the conscious mind’s defenses and speak directly to the subconscious, facilitating change and healing.

For example, one of Erickson’s most famous stories involves a young woman who was severely agoraphobic (afraid to leave her house).

Erickson visited her and began talking about a tomato plant. He meticulously described the process of a tomato seed’s growth, focusing on the natural and inevitable development stages of the plant—from a small seed to a mature plant bearing ripe tomatoes.

This story was a metaphor for personal growth and the natural capacity for change inherent in all living things, including the young woman.
