Visiting the Bridget Riley exhibition on the Hayward Gallery in London I started to consider motion and notion. Though Riley’s work is summary, she spent a lot of her time at artwork college in life drawing lessons observing the human physique. Her undulating strains and dots originated in muscular folds and physique spirals.

Her work disconcert, transferring as you stand immobile in entrance of them. A gallery assistant instructed me she will get by way of the day by trying on the ground. Among the works keep nonetheless so if she has to look she retains her eyes solely on them.

Slender consciousness impacts motion

Some days beforehand I used to be in a small neighbourhood grocery store shopping for flour. The aisles usually are not broad. A member of workers got here in the direction of me pushing a cumbersome ground cleansing machine. I stood properly again so he might go.

The patron in entrance of me had different concepts. Intent on a bottle of water in the back of the store, he marched by way of the hole, knocking into the machine. He stumbled and flailed, hanging the shocked assistant a glancing blow along with his strolling stick. I waited for the autumn that by no means got here, and he carried on.

This man’s notion was focussed so narrowly on his purpose that he had no sense of what was round him. It wasn’t simply him – most of us are unaware of how we transfer till one thing goes fallacious.
